Rene Russo was born in Burbank California. She was the daughter of Shirley (Balocca) who was a barmaid and factory laborer and Nino Russo. Her father a sculptor and mechanic, left the family in the year Rene was just a toddler and her mother tended Rene as well as her sister Toni as a single mom. Her father, an Italian from the Italian-German-English-Irish lineage was also her mother. Rene suffered from scoliosis during junior high and was forced to wear a full-torso brace. Some of her classmates called them Jolly Green Giant because she was so tall. The brace she was wearing was taken off when she started Burroughs High School, and even though classmate Ron Howard joined her there also, Rene was somewhat of a snob. Rene found herself unable to keep up with the academics as well as the social aspects at school. Rene left school at the close of 10th grade. For the next 18 months she went on to work a number of temporary opportunities for earning some money. In a movie theatre, she got free tickets to films. In a restaurant, she got free food. It was common for her to work 2 jobs at a time. The last job she worked for solely for earning money was working full time at an eyeglasses manufacturing facility, examining contact lenses.
